The New York Times recently returned its focus to Zika-Microcephaly (2015-16 Brazil’s pandemic) in “The Forgotten Virus: Zika …”, but didn’t (adequately) explain the reasons behind the (tropical) world’s fortunate reprieve from the huge scare of (a predicted) million EXTRA microcephalic births, yearly. Conversely, my reformulation, “Investigating Zika-Microcephaly’s ‘Crash’” in July’s issue of the American Journal of Medicine — and my book, Overturning Zika, does.
There are nearly 1 billion women of reproductive age throughout the tropics still operating under the fear that a single mosquito bite could unalterably damage the cherished life within. Imagine the stress and strain of having to avoid any/all mosquito bites for months while living in a moist tropical area – let alone the extra expense and potential toxicity from slathering insect repellent on repetitively. It is not as if every scientific theory ultimately proves to be correct, cf. Lamarck; moreover, certain illnesses can be real and yet exaggerated (e.g. swine flu, West Nile).
The mechanisms of scientific review in Brazil 2015 were rushed amidst the panic created by scientists’ leaking their conjectures prematurely to the general press. My own approach aligns with the fresh-eyed child’s in The Emperor’s New Clothes but remains inaccessible to those receiving Zika-funding – oddly enough.
“Love means never having to say you’re sorry” all well and good for “Love Story” – but does this exemption cover the WHO, CDC, and Dr. Fauci? There have been no retractions, reformulations forthcoming despite zero recurrence of any microcephaly-burst even in areas with acknowledged or presumed Zika since (including Ground Zero Brazil). The public is owed an apology.
